About Me

Hello! My name is Jennifer McCulloch.
I am a fully qualified, GTC registered English teacher with over 15 years teaching experience, including 6 years at one of Scotland's leading independent schools.
I am also an exam marker for the SQA which gives me an excellent knowledge of exactly what the exam board is looking for. Developing good exam technique is essential for success.
I believe that with the right guidance and tuition, every child can thrive and succeed in their study of English.
As well as teaching core skills and supporting your child in their study of specific class texts, an important part of my role is empowering pupils with the confidence required to thrive. No question is too silly!
Working with pupils one to one online means that I can assess individual needs and provide all the support required to ensure they excel. I am now a full-time tutor which means that I have even more time to dedicate to supporting your child on their journey towards success.

What a typical lesson might look like
There is no typical lesson as I like to tailor my lessons to suit your child’s specific needs, but this is what a lesson might look like for an exam pupil:
-
For the first 5 minutes we will have a chat about what they are up to in class and whether there are any tests or assignments coming up. This way, I can plan ahead for any support they may need in the coming weeks.
-
If they are working on a critical essay, they can share with me what they have written so far and I can offer further guidance and support. This may be offering support on the structure of the essay, advising on the selection of strong quotations, helping pupils to expand their analysis, while also ensuring they are answering the essay question fully and effectively.
OR
-
We may look at one of the specific RUAE question types together. I will teach them the “How to” and associated formula, along with any specific tips from the SQA. We will then do some warm up questions before diving into targeted past paper questions, building confidence in this specific question type. As we are using a live document, I can see their highlighted selection of possible answers and I also can see their answers as they type, allowing me to be able to guide and coach them effectively in all parts of the process.

Why Online tutoring?
Prior to the pandemic, I tutored in-person, visiting pupils' houses. I fully expected that I would return to in-person tutoring after restrictions ended, however, I quickly found online tutoring to be more effective.
Google Meet allows me to interact with your child face to face while Google Documents allows me to see what your child types as they type it. This is the in-person equivalent of me looking over your child's shoulder with a microscope as they write! This allows me to very easily notice any issues with sentence structures or spelling. It also works very well in allowing me to support your child with essays and folio work.
Helpfully, no longer having to travel means that I can dedicate more time to developing specific resources to support your child's class texts- which are different for every pupil.
